Anybody know what is going on with PowerDesigner? Thsy say
this fourm is closing and going to the SAP fourms, but they
haven't created a PD forum that I can find. The question
keeps coming up if the product is dead. David D says it
isn't, but there is no visability about the product or any
roadmap published. I've been using the product since V6 and
have years of work/models. I'm worried about continuing to
use PD without some communication from SAP about what is
happening. Is it time to jump ship? I'd hate to see a
great product lost. Even upgraded libraries would give the
product some life at its current version. I'm working in C#
4.5 and the library is still at 2.0. The inability to
reverse partial classes is also a killer for me.

Hi Randy,

I hope PD is not dead as we are just in the process of
moving from Erwin to PD16.1. I was having great difficulty
finding an active discussion forum on PD.
SAP site is terrible. After jumping lots of hoops got an S
id to
login to SAP site, but could not find any forum on PD.

Then someone referred to this one on Sybase site and
ofcourse
this one asks for an email id and pwd to login and not an S
id.
Upon using the same email id as given on SAP site, it says
"User already registered"
So finally registered with some other email id to get in.

Hoping I can find some real practical advise and tips from
others
who might have moved to PD from Erwin.

We have got the Enterprise Edition and at the moment only
concentrating on deploying the Data Modeling piece of it.

Yes, I tried the SAP site too and found nothing. I even
emailed the PD team and have received no response. This is
the type of behavior that killed Commodore, the industry
leader in the day. When it comes to technology, silence is
not golden - it's gold for the competors. I'm not sure why
SAP bought Sybase. It may have been just for the mobility
stuff. It seems that PD has gone into maintainance only
mode.

Not sure what DB you use, but I'm think that if your needs
are just data modeling and you're not moving to new versions
(e.g., SQL 2012) or using advanced features of releases like
2008R2 (e.g., Hierarchy or spatial datatypes) you are still
OK with migrating from Erwin. If you need more than that
you may want to look elsewhere.

It may be that modeling as a product space is dying as a
whole. Good modeling practives are not for the timid, and
the modeling aspects of Visual Studio and SQL Management
Studio meet the needs of most. Selling the value
proposition for modeling is another area Sybase has been
weak in. We bought training and the best they could do was
show the features, not even able to show us a case study.
Their story was basically "We don't want to push our
methodology on others. Everyone has their own." I think
that is a mindset thing stops new adopters; in my experience
most organizations barely understand things like UML or
model based design patterns. People want/need some hand
holding and some "how to realize the value" instruction.

I think even if SAP every pulls their heads out and looks
around they may find the product dead even if that's not
what the intended. This isn't an area where customers are
lining up (could be though). Once you lose customers here
it's unlikely they're coming back. I'm sure moving off
Erwin isn't a simple thing for you; what are the odds you'de
go back once you've moved?

For decades Commodore was held as an example of how to kill
a company - for the next couple of decades will it be called
"the Commodore/Sybase failure models?" Anyway, shouldn't
rant so much, I think I need to save my energy for
shopping...
