Hello,

I have a 1520 (RSP_SRV_a) and a 1550 (15.6) (RSP_SRV_c) replication server
and routes between these servers.

I have a database replication definition in RSP_SRV_c named
RDB_DSP_SRV_c_test_db and I want to create a database subscription in \
server RSP_SRV_a :

RSP_SRV_a..1> create subscription SB_DSP_SRV_c_a_test_db
RSP_SRV_a..2> for database replication definition RDB_DSP_SRV_c_test_db
RSP_SRV_a..3> with primary at DSP_SRV_c.test_db
RSP_SRV_a..4> with replicate at DSP_SRV_a.test_db
RSP_SRV_a..5> without materialization
RSP_SRV_a..6> subscribe to truncate table

I get error :

The route version (currently '1520') must be at least '1550' to perform that
operation.

All route versions are 1520 in both servers.

Is it possible to have database replication from a 15.6 server to a 15.2
server, and if so, what should I change ?
(It works in the other direction).

Thanks,
Luc.

Found this in the replication server manual :
""If your replicate Replication Server is at lower version than your primary
Replication Server, you cannot create a database subscription at the
replicate Replication Server for a primary database controlled by the
primary Replication Server.""

That's kind of a tough restriction. I'm wondering if there is an upgrade
method if you have bi-directional replication with database subscriptions in
both directions.

Yes, this is documented at least for database replication ....not sure if
rs_fast_route_upgrade will help in this case.
Can you do a quick test to see if you can create table level subscriptions ?

The documentation says : "The route version is the earlier of the two site
version numbers of the source and destination Replication Servers of the
route. After you upgrade the source and destination Replication Servers on
either end of a route and also set their site versions to a higher
Replication Server version, you need to upgrade the route."

Site versions are 1520 and 1550, and route versions are 1520. So I don't
think I can upgrade routes to 1550 if there is still a 1520 server involved.

> Can you do a quick test to see if you can create table level subscriptions

Table level subscriptions seem to work : I created a test table and have
database replication from the 15.2 repserver to the 15.6 server and table
replication from the 15.6 server to the 15.2 server.

It seems that upgrading a replication system including routes and
bi-directional database replication can only be done by bringing down
completely all replication and upgrade both repservers at the same time. Or
am I missing something ?

Besides the MSA between similar servers for availability reasons, we also
have table replication to other systems who rely on a latency of seconds and
not minutes, so upgrading replication server will be considered as downtime.

I'm missing the purpose of having route versions. If table subscriptions
don't require routes to be at level 1550, I don't understand why database
subscriptions do.
What is the technical background for having this restriction ?

Thanks,
Luc.

I was going to post a follow-up when I knew the final outcome, but here is
what happened so far.

I started with 2 15.2 repservers A and B with bi-directional database
replication (MSA- between them).
I added a 3rd 15.6 repserver C to setup bi-directional replication between
each pair.
Then I found out that I couldn't create a database subscription in a 15.2
server to a database managed
by a 15.6 server.
I dropped the routes and then the 15.6 server crashed and it couldn't start
anymore, this is probably
due to a bug that is solved in ESD #1 (case 11685123 ).
It left my production servers A and B in an inconsistent state, with part of
the routes dropped.
I updated the rs_-tables in the rssd_dbs to remove the 15.6 server
definitions.

According to tech support (case 11684861), the restriction of database
subscriptions between
the different versions concerns only new database subscriptions. So it
should be possible to upgrade
servers one by one.

My question about why this restriction exists, was answered with : "There
doesn't seem to be a good
explanation other than it is just a limitation in the design of MSA."

I'm now busy with setting up a replication system with 3 15.2 repservers and
once that is done,
I'm going to upgrade one to 15.6 to see if db subscriptions keep working;

Luc.

Just a follow up message.

I did the upgrade today and db subsriptions keep working.

So it's possible to upgrade 15.2 repservers with routes and db subscriptions
one by one without breaking the replication system. New database
subscriptions can only be added after all repservers are upgraded.

Luc.

This restriction is only applicable to new database subscriptions.
Upgrading one server doesn't affect existing database subscriptions.
They keep working.

So it's possible to first upgrade the 'passive' replication server, switch
active/passive and upgrade the other replication server (in a bi-directional
MSA replication setup with a route between repservers).
