Hello,

Currently using :
novell 5.1
ADS 5.7
Alaska Xbase++ 1.9
windows workstations: XP

Network Administrator is planning to upgrade to :
novell 6.2
ADS 9.1
Alaska++ 1.9

The main issue is that she's planning to go to a pure IP network and all my
applications are currently connecting through IPX

cServerDrive := "f:"
oSession := dacSession():New( "ADSDBE", cServerDrive )
if ( oSession:isConnected( ) )

What do i need to do\change to make my application connect through IP?

I've setup a test environment :
novell 5.1 // pure IP
ADS 9.1
Alaska++ 1.9
In ADS.cfg : IP_PORT = 2001
windows workstation : XP

In my application :

oSession := dacSession():New( "DBE=ADSDBE";SERVER=\\192.168.10.100:2001 )
if ( oSession:isConnected( ) )

But this is not working. I cannot connect to the ADS.

Thanks,

Maurits

What error do you get when you use the UNC path with \\ip:port? After
you changed the ADS.cfg did you unload and reload the ads.nlm?

Also, you should not actually need to change your program. you can
still use the F: drive. What error do you get when you use the f:
drive? I will assume a 6420. First make sure you can connect with the
UNC (\\ip:port). Once you can connect, look at this KB Item and setup
an ADS.ini file.

Thank you Edgar,

After I've changed the ads.cfg I did unload and reload the ads.nlm.
I don't get any error when using the f:drive or \\ip:port.
i just can't get connected. The following IF statement is returning 'FALSE'
if ( oSession:isConnected( ) )

I will look into the KB item and setup an ADS.ini file.

I will keep you posted

best regards,

Maurits

Try ARC, that way you can get actual Advantage error codes to help
diagnose the problems.

The easiest in ARC is to use the "Remote Server Info" screen
(Tools->Remote Server Info). Then type in \\ip:port\sys. If that
works, close the screen and try f:\

check your client DLLs. They must be 6.2 minimum.

where can i find all documentation about IP ?
The ads.ini file, is it also to be used in a novell network? not only in ADS
on windows\Linux?

Yes , when i try to connect to ADS i receive an error : 6420. just like

The file name to configure the ADS on a NetWare server is
ADS.CFG and NOT ADS.INI!! Place the appropriate file inside
the ADS directory!

In case you are not demanding on a connect to ADS w/o
NetWare client (or drive map), no need to change you app or
the ADS setup.

If I where you, I would use Novell??s drive mapping just like
before to have no hassle. Only thing you need to check is,
wether the Netware client allows IP or not.

Update the client (re-install), and select "pure IP"! The
client now will use IP to connect the server only. If your
client??s connect-string to the ADS constists of the correct
drive letter and path, ADS will do the rest.

However, setup all ADS-DLL??s and the server to the highest
versions (if you have ADS 7 use 7.1.xxx or higher and not
7.0.0.0)! I??d already faced connection problems with x.0.0.0
versions already - not only under NetWare.

Attached my own ADS.CFG (ADS 8.1) - find some extra settings
at the end for CLIPPER apps!

Basicly what you are saying is that connecting to ADS is not coded in the
program source. ADS is working on the vailable network infrastructure.
No need to make changes in the program source. I just need to re install the
novell client and copy the latest ADS - Dll's

Just like you mentioned i also still want to use novell drive mappings.

Thanks ,I'll try it out.

Just waiting on my test novell server, it's being reinstalled...

Hi.

The connect to the ADS will be made via ADS dll??s. What I meant was,
that you don??t need to configure anything aside from the standard as
long as you will use you drive mappings and you have the appropriate
netware setup (TCP/IP).

Use the newest NetWare Client as well as the newsest ADS DLL??s
according your ADS server version.

Good luck!

Thanks Maico,

It worked!!!
I replaced all dll's with the newest version and it worked!!
I can connect to the database.

Yet i encounter another problem. I cannot all open all files . i receive the
following error:

error 5004 : either ACE could not find the specified file, or you dont have
sufficient rights to acces the file.

i dont think it has something to do with rights, because i can open other
files within the same folder with the application

any suggestion???
