Hello,

I encountered a strange problem and want to know, if somebody had symilar
problem also.

I changed a two years old router SMC Barricade (8 port) and instal new Dlink
wireless router DI-524 UP.

There are two computers connected through router with a cable, like before
(no wireless line needed).

One MS XP computer has ADS server installed, the other MS XP is a client.

After a new Dlink router instalation the connection to the server from my
xBase++ program become few ten times slower. Practicaly unusable.

When connecting those two computers together directly with a LAN cable it
stars working properly again .

Do anybody know, what could be the cause ?

One more observation, file copying (even huge fiels) goes without any delay,
also ADS ARC connection is fast. That last is most strange.

Any idea ?

Best regards

Toma?

Thank you very much, Rodd.

It is strange, that to noone of my clients anything symilar has happened
till now.

Thanks Good, it happened to me.

But among tenths of routers only one has such problem.

Do you think, that there is something wrong with the new piece of hardware ?

Something, that would be proper for reclamation, although it is hard to
prove ?

Best regards

Toma?

Nope, I did replace it with new one, but trouble remains ... ?

Maybe do you know, why ADS does not work with TCP/IP protocol, that is, as I
heard, less vulnerable of bad packages ?

Best regards

Thank your, Rodd, thank you Edgar.

I will examine and report you tomorrow.

It is strange, that so many routers till now did not make any trouble, but
this type (I tryed two new peaces), does ?

Best regards

Edgar, do you maybe know, what are advatages / disadvantages of both
protocols.

Is it right to assume , that
1. UDP/IP is faster and more reliable, when everything is all all right
inside hardware, but when something goes wrong, it is shown as serious speed
decrease ?
2. and that TCP/IP protocol is not so vulnerable on bad hardware
connections, but is not so quick in optimal conditions ?

Best regards

Tomaz

Tomaz,

For the most part I would agree with you. Except that I don't believe
there is any additional reliability with UDP vs. TCP. Both should be
reliable.

So, to wrap up, I would say that UDP is generally more optimal, but can
be subject to problems when the network is not optimal. In which case
TCP/IP can help out.

Strange solution ...

We switched off the DHCP and assign fixed IPs to both computers and now it
works, like it should.

What could be wrong with that series of Router, I do not know, but it would
not be fine, that it happens to my clients....

What concernes TCP/IP protocol, we tried it, but with no gain in comparison
toUDP/IP in this particular situation.

Any suggestion, what is going on, would be deeply appreciated ...

Thank you both and best regards

Toma?

Did you try the connection with an IP address rather then a server name
or mapped drive?

Maybe the DNS or something is/was having problems.

The other thing to look at is when using DHCP did the DNS, subnet and
gateway all get assigned correctly? Do they differ from what you set
when using static IP addresses.

I would definitely check the vendor of the product and see if they have
any firmware upgrade. Maybe a known problem.

Edgar, I have trided your suggestion and you're right!
I turned on the DHCP on router, but when making connection I used IP instead
of computer name. No problems at all!
There is clearly something wrong with router handling the names and IPs. Is
this DNS or NETBIOS problem?
IP, subnet mask and gateway are correctly assigned by the router.
The firmware on the router is up to date and I could find the problem by
google-ing it.

Thank you Edgar for your help!!!

Best regards,
Tomaz Grom
