We installed the advantage PHP extentions on linux and get the following
errors.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: ads_connect() in
/home/www/tonypep.com/MemberList.php on line 24

Does anyone know the step by step instructions on configuring php to see the
ads extentions?

We did that but it still does not work.
If we are using Advantage 8.1, what version of linux needs to be installed?

These are the Linux requirements:
http://devzone.advantagedatabase.com/dz/webhelp/Advantage9.0/advantage.htm#ads1/system_requirements.htm

Linux (glibc 2.3.2 or greater and kernel version 2.4 or greater)

Are you perhaps running a different build of PHP? Maybe see if when you
re-compiled and re-installed PHP if it was installed in a different
directory. Also, be sure to use the full path so if you have a PHP
binary somewhere else but "first" on your path that you get the right build.

As far as I know they should be compatible on Linux since you are
re-compiling. I think the real issue with versions is on Windows where
there are only pre-compiled DLL files.

Just to be clear. You downloaded the source for PHP 4.4.9 and
re-compiled. Where did it install to when you ran "make install"? And
where are you running php from (are you passing the entire path or
running just "php" and letting it find it on the path)?

This is what we get back from our Linux administrator.

Here is what ...errors I get:

./buildconf
You should not run buildconf in a release package.
use buildconf --force to override this check.
root@www:/usr/src/php-5.2.6# ./buildconf --force
Forcing buildconf
using default Zend directory
buildconf: checking installation...
buildconf: autoconf version 2.13 (ok)

Notice: Following unknown configure options were used:

--with-advantage=/usr/local/ads/php

Please note that the setup.pl creates a ext/advantage directory in php src.
Here is the content:

Makefile.in
config.m4
config.w32
php_ads.c
php_ads.h

I do not get any other error.
I have tried both v8.1 and v9. Same thing.

Jerry,

I also received this message on 5.2.6 of PHP. I know 5.2.3 works so PHP
must have changed something else in the setup. I am taking a look into it.

Jerry,

OK, seems something with PHP, or the buildconf command in linux.

To fix, change directory into the php directory and remove the file
"configure".

Now follow the normal instructions:
./buildconf --force
./configure --with-advantage=/usr/local/ads
make
make install

Thanks Edgar, Now the extentions are installed, but now we are getting the
following error.

Warning: SQL error: [Extended Systems][Advantage SQL][ASA] Error 6060:
Advantage Database Server not available on specified server.
axServerConnect, SQL state HY000 in SQLDriverConnect in
/home/www/tonypep.com/MemberList.php on line 24

Our technician told me that the database server is running.
The connection string that is being used is
DataDirectory=\\\\home\\advantage\\MIS.add;DefaultType=Advantage;ServerTypes=2;TrimTrailingSpaces=TRUE";

Do you have any ideas what can be going on?

Is the server name of the Advantage server "home"?

If it is you could try adding the port to the connection string like
DataDirectory=\\\\home:6262\\advantage\\MIS.add;DefaultType=Advantage;ServerTypes=2;TrimTrailingSpaces=TRUE";

Also, check the hosts file has the hostname of the linux machine
(current machine) in the file and set to the correct IP address (not
127.0.0.1)

So is the application (PHP) and the database server on the same machine?

Did you get a chance to check the /etc/hosts file to make sure it had
the correct IP address? If any changes were made, it might be a good
idea to restart ADS just to be safe.

I would also suggest looking in /var/log/advantage (if the database is
on the linux machine) and viewing the error logs for any additional
errors that may help.

ok, with all that said, try the following if the above does not help.
(assuming the server is on the linux box).
Add "ALLOW_IPC_CONNECTIONS=0" to the ads.conf file for the Advantage
server. This will disable interprocess communication. Then restart ADS
and retry the test.

Ok we have it now trying to connect after setting ALLOW_IPC_CONNECTIONS=0

but now we are encountering a 7077 error.
I just wanted to find out that the database that is on
the linux server now was created on windows and
just copied via ftp to the linux box. Is there anythinig
different from the windows database files then linux database files?

No difference in file structure for Linux/Windows as far as the database
is concerned.

I would recommend to look at the error logs in /var/log/advantage (feel
free to copy them to Windows if you want) and see what additional error
codes are logged with the 7077 error. These additional error codes will
be the exact reason why the Dictionary could not be opened.

At this point you are connecting. I believe the problem with not having
the ALLOW_IPC_CONNECTIONS setting and being unable to connect is a bug
that is currently being worked on.

What this indicates is that ADS is looking to open the dictionary memo
file. (the .am file). In this case we are looking for the file
/home/advantage/MIS.AM but are unable to find the file.

Since you are on a Linux machine case sensitivity comes into play which
does not exist for windows. Does this file exist as MIS.AM?

What I would recommend to solve this and prevent problems in the future
is to rename all files to all lower case. Then set the
LOWERCASE_ALL_PATHS option in the "ads.conf" file to 1 (true) and
restart Advantage. Then, regardless of what the application looks for
the server will convert the path to lowercase and look for the file.

This is what Joachim was indicating in his reply.
