I am doing an estimate for a modification which we plan on using PB 9's XML
capabilities for. I have not seen 9 yet (it should be in the mail), but my
estimate is due today.

Will I be able to do a .saveAs(XML!) and a corresponding ImportFile(xxx.xml)
on a "complex" XML file like the one below with many levels of nesting, or
will I need to write a lot of code to do all the nesting?

I'm guessing I'll be able to do the 2 simple commands, but if not, I'll need
to add hours to my estimate.

Thanks!

Daniel,
Here's a question: Are <C> and <D> different elementTypes, or just two
separate instances of the same elementType? The XML datawindow can handle
any number of nested levels, but it can only handle a single hierarchy. If
<C> and <D> are two different elementTypes, you'll have to use PBDOM to
create that XML - I don't think the XML datawindow won't be able to handle
it by itself...

No, <C> and <D> are unique element types.... so I'll have to use PBDOM
then. Is that going to add much to my time estimates?

Not that much more.. The PBDOM extensions will allow you to craft an XML
stream a lot faster than using MSXML or simple string manipulation.

Where can we find some examples of these XML file handling using the
Datawindows?
And also using PB DOM?

Thanks,
Biju

Roy/Paul,

This will be helpful as we are thinking of bridging Blaze (a business rule
application that writes into XML) with our existing PB app after we move to
PB 9 (.x?). This will be another tier in our app.

Cheers,
Biju

Mine is in CodeXchange already. I'm not sure about Roy's PBDOM demo, but
I'm sure it will wind up there.

Here's a quick one. This dw produces a 3-level nested hierarchical XML file
using the ASA Demo database.

That might not be compatible with some of the beta builds. What build

Does the template have a DOCTYPE element that references a DTD or a schema?
If so, if the DTD or schema are not found, you'll get a parser error similar
to what you're seeing. The DOCTYPE element is usually on line 2 of XML
documents (unless they have comments or custom processing instructions)

Since I am completely new to this...
I don't see any reference to a DOCTYPE element in the .srd file. I tried
adding the app that Paul has on codeexchange as a new Target and that too
didn't happen, says target exists, just add the target. When I try to add
the target it does not allow to do so.
Anyway I was trying this at home on Beta version, so I guess that's the
problem...
Still waiting for our copy of PB 9.0 to arrive at work!

Cheers,
Biju

Hi All,

On a side note. Does anyone know if it is possible to get xml output of a
datawindow and return it as a string from a COM component that you have
built in PB?

Does anyone know of any examples that I could take a look at?

Many Thanks,
David Hickman

Sure it is -- it's as easy as

String ls_retval

ls_retval = dw_1.object.DataWindow.Data.XML

Thanks for that, I have managed to get this working. However, it only
seems to return the result since the last time that I did a manual retrieve
on the datawindow.

If I modify the database and then do not do a retrieve statement then this
method will still return the old data.

Is there any way around this?

Thanks for all your help.

David, the DataWindow XML export only exports the data in the
DataWindow buffer so you have to call the retrieve function if your
data has changed.

Is there a way to call the retrieve function from within the NVO.

If so, how is this done?

Thanks again for all your help,

That's only a few more lines of code in an NVO. One method would be to
write a function called getSalesOrders() that passes a string variable by
reference and returns an integer return code.

function getSalesOrders( ref string sXML ) returns integer
integer rv
datastore ds
ds = CREATE datastore
ds.dataobject = 'd_nested_sales_order_xml'
ds.SetTransObject( SQLCA )

rv = ds.Retrieve()
If rv > 0 then
// the explicit type conversion is probably not necessary...
sXML = string( ds.object.DataWindow.Data.XML )
else
sXML = 'No data found'
end if

destroy ds
Return rv
end function

Then call it like this:
string sXML
integer RV
RV = myNVO.getSalesOrders( sXML )

Thanks for that Paul, and to everyone else for their help. It all seems to
be working now!

Is there any reason that would stop me from compiling the NVO into a COM
object and then accessing this data from VB or another program?

Thanks again!

I've done exactly that, and it works really well. We have several software
partners that want to query our database, and this gives them a nice way of
doing that without having any real knowledge of our internal database
schema. As long as we agree on the XML schema that we exchange, they can
instantiate our COM object, run the queries, and get XML back...

Hi All,

I've been giving this a go recently and have made sure that I am using my
own transaction object and not SQLCA. The NVO works fine if I access it
from within PowerBuilder but will not work when compiled as a COM.

The ds.Retrieve method is returning -1. Do I need to change any settings
for the COM project or do anything else to get this to work?

Thank you for all your help,
Best Regards,
David Hickman

Paul,
Correct me if i am wrong.if you are converting your NVO to a COM object you have
to create a User define transaction object ,the default sqlca will not
work.

Yes - open the project object (the one that compiles the NVO as a COM
object). Go to the Library tab on the properties dialog and make sure you
have the checkbox turned ON for the PBL that contains the datawindow object.
If you're using dynamic assignment, you'll need to check this box on, or the
dw doesn't get compiled into the DLL (even if the dw is in the same PBL as
the NVO).

Daniel -- this is definitely doable. You'll need to spend some time on
getting your export template to match the document structure (hint: look at
the Start Detail and Start Group Header template properties). This should
not take more then a couple of hours.
